Military Death Benefits

Veterans Affairs Jewish Veteran Services US flagStarting on July 7, 2014 Veterans Affairs (VA) changed its burial benefit regulations that allows eligible family members to be paid quickly and efficiently. The new regulations allow VA to automate payment for burial benefits given to eligible surviving spouses. Previously, Veterans Affairs paid for burial benefits on a reimbursement basis which required receipts to be sent for fairly small one-time payments.

Veterans Affairs will pay up to $2,000 for burial expenses for military service-related deaths. The costs of transporting the deceased may partly or fully covered if the veteran is buried in a VA national cemetery.

Veterans Affairs will pay up to $749 for burial expenses for non-service connected deaths if the veteran has been hospitalized by VA at the time of death. If the veteran has not been hospitalized by VA at the time of death, then families can receive up to $300 in coverage for burial and funeral expenses and a $749 plot-interment allowance (if not buried in a national cemetery).
