I justed heard of the Drs.passing and I am so very sorry for your loss.Dr.Appel was a one of a kind.I sure enjoyed his friendship and sharing laughs when I was working at Sharp.May he rest in peace and the suffering is over.You can remove my slippers,I won't be there as long as the Great Dr.Appeal has gone.

Gene was my office neighbor when I first came to practice in 1976. We shared patients, stories, laughs and the trials and tribulations of private practice. I was always amazed by his accomplishments with Marathons that he completed.Talented, compassionate, dedicated and devoted. He will be missed. RIP - colleague and friend, Keith Wahl MD

Story shared: Gene gets accepted at Harvard

Gene, after graduating from Columbia University with and Engineering Degree, felt the urge to become a Medical Doctor, and one of his uncles dared him to get accepted at Harvard, promising him to pay his tuition if he was accepted, the rest is history, Gene was accepted, became a Doctor and went to train as a Surgeon within the Harvard system. The other quality that he had was his innate ability to do fundraising, he always told me how he enjoyed doing it to help Jewish functions and organizations, and what made him so successful was his remarkable sense of humor . I always missed Gene after life separated us.

I had the opportunity and the privilege to work with Gene, we shared an office for several years and always had an excellent relationship, Gene was an extremily inteligent and well trained Surgeon , his sense of humor always added a pleasant detail in our professional relationship. His education was impressive having obtained an Engineering degree from Columbia University and a Medical Degree from Harvard. His surgical practice was a very successful one. I extend my sincere condolences to his family: Wife Barbara, daughters Debbie and Karen and Son Phillip .May Gene rest in peace after a very busy and productive life. Victor M. Uranga.
